I’m a bow tie. I was made in Thailand and shipped to these states that they said is united. I don’t know why things are like this. I mean I didn’t choose to be here. It’s just a thing. Something natural. I’m too young in this world to understand the deep history of the earth. They just shipped me here because this is what is best for me. All I am is something attached to someone, but I sure do make them look good. They wear me and they talked about me. Often times, I’m not part of the conversation. I mean...I’m just a bow tie, so what am I thinking? I have no autonomy. I have no choice. I wonder how things would be if instead of an object, I am a person. Maybe, I might call myself Bo Thai and have a whole migration story instead of a shipping story.
- The Bow Tie from Bow Tie & Friends Tarot Cards
As an undocumented Thai activist and artist, I wanted to bring awareness and understanding of undocumented Asian American Pacific Islanders to everyday people who may not have been exposed to the immigration experience through art. I wanted to write a real story about our collective experience in a genuine and authentic way. A collection of untold stories of pain, growth, love, and loss of those underrepresented. A multi dimensional story that reclaim our agency and highlight our resilience thriving in a place not meant for us. This is the story of bow tie and friends, 16 undocumented AAPIs who were lost, found, dream, woke up, and exist.
Bow Tie and Friends essentially is a unique art project telling collective stories of undocumented Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) in an authentic, diverse, and intimate way through drawings, poetry, and interviews in a tarot card format. Much like how conventional tarot cards have a different symbol or meaning on each card, Bo’s tarot card each showcase one facet of the multi-dimensional undocumented experience through storytelling and poetry from directly impacted AAPIs. This project was co-created by Bo Thai and Madeleine Villanueva and made possible thanks to Judy Wu, UCI spirit, and friends.
100% of the proceeds from this card will be use to create a scholarship for undocumented AAPI. This is the story of our community, and I hope for this to be used to uplift our truth, each other, and our humanity.
